February 2013 will be the 3rd annual spa city sweethearts and I can't wait!!
Now let me explain a little bit about the spa city sweethearts. One day Ruby, Violet, and I were sitting around talking, them drinking wine and we came up with this idea. Why not put on a burlesque show to raise funds for the Valley Of The Vapors Independent Music Festival? Shortly after that epiphany Ruby started production. Ruby talked to all of our lady friends and found that a lot of them had wanted to try burlesque and were more then happy to strip down for the cause. We had never produced a show, much less performed. We all worked day and night researching, rehearsing, sewing, and planning. We had two or three nights of rehearsing and Ruby had a decorating team working away. On February 12th 2011, we opened the doors to the Low Key Arts building and people started to line up. We were all so very nervous and excited; it was almost unbearable. Shortly before the show started I recall going to smoke and I walked out the front door and seeing a line around the corner and packed parking lot. The backstage was cramped and uneasy, the place was totally sold out, then auctioning started. The first few tables sold for $30, then $60, then started going up to the hundreds. I ran to Ruby and told her and she was so happy she could barely keep from crying. Once everyone had their seats Dolly Alcoholly took the stage said a few words, thanked the crowd and the Low Key, and introduced Ms. Ruby Lead. The spotlight hit her and Ruby Was truly born. She did Marilyn Monroe's version of "I wanna be loved by you". The show was an immediate success! We had somewhere around 18 to 20 performers most of which had never been on stage a day in their lives!!
We started planning next years show.
A couple months after the sweethearts some of us had decided that once a year just wasn't enough for us and we contacted the ladies that had shown interest in performing soon and we formed The Foul Play Cabaret. But that's a totally different story :)
In January 2012 we started out first workshop for our future Spa City Sweethearts. We had workshops for hair and make up, simple choreography, costume making, hair piece and pastie making, and much more. We had lost some ladies from the previous year but we had also gained some very beautiful and talented ladies! Raven Rose, Rosa Lee Bloom, Harley Derringer and Norma Bates to name a few. It was much more calm and organized back stage but the show sold out twice as quick! It was a bigger version then the year before!! With a choreographed intro by The Foul Play Cabaret and and a finally by any of the ladies that wanted to participate. Another huge success!! Another unbelievable show!
This year I'm hoping to meet many more ladies and possibly gentlemen that will be performing along side with me and the rest of the FPC. I have so many things planned!!!! I'm saying 2013 is going to be the best year yet!!! Stay tuned for updates and sneak peaks of this years doings! Xoxoxo Doris
